Consumer Information on Genetic DNA Testing

Frequently Asked Questions on DNA Testing

How accurate is genetic DNA testing?
It varies somewhat depending on the specific test, but DNA tests are 99.9% accurate or better. Often the DNA test is done twice in parallel, called 2X testing.

What body samples can be used in DNA testing?
Common specimens for testing include any bodily fluid as well as skin, hair, and used razors, combs, toothbrushes, eating utensils or chewing gum. The DNA is the same, so no specimen is more accurate than another.

Do I have to visit a testing lab or clinic?
Generally, you can collect a DNA specimen at home and then send it to the lab for analysis. A popular home DNA test involves collecting cheek cells on a cotton swab that is then mailed to the testing facility.

How do I select the DNA testing lab or clinic to use?
Make sure the testing provider has an ISO 17025 Accreditation, is a member of the AABB Parentage Accreditation Program, and participates in CAP Proficiency Testing.

How much does a DNA test cost?
Depending on the type and complexity of the test, prices range from about $150 - $600, with results back in a couple of weeks.
