The DNA Paternity Test

DNA paternity testing is a popular and precise way of determining the true biological father of a child. As such, it is commonly used in the legal system in child support and custody cases, and is fully permissible by law. If two alleged fathers are closely related, such as brothers or cousins, more extended DNA testing is performed to determine paternity.

DNA samples used for paternity testing include buccal (cheek) cells, any bodily fluid, hair, skin flakes, or a used toothbrush, dental floss, razor, chewing gum or eating utensil. A popular home DNA test kit involves obtaining a DNA sample by swabbing the inside of the cheek with a cotton swab and then mailing the kit to the DNA testing provider.
